Storage Tips

  • Start planning your move at least 4-5 weeks in advance by making a list of things YOU need to take care of before the actual ‘moving-day’. Pre-pack as much as you can.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute to rent your storage unit. You can make all the arrangements, pay for the unit and we can simply activate your PIN on the date that you wish your occupancy to take effect.
  • Now is the time to remember all the people that YOU helped move and give them a call.
  • Don’t assume your present insurance covers moving and storage. Check it out! For your convenience our facilities are pre-approved at a local insurance agent.
  • CAUTION – It is against the law to store hazardous or combustible items such as gasoline, cleaning fluids, paint, etc. Drain gasoline from lawn mowers, snowmobiles, power tools etc. prior to storing inside.
  • Do not store food items as they may attract rodents and/or pests.
  • Store frequently used items towards the front of your unit to avoid having to search for them later.
  • Appliances should be thoroughly cleaned before storing and fridge and freezer doors should be left slightly ajar. Remove vacuum cleaner bags also.
  • Store mattress and box springs on long edge. Use mattress bags and elevate off the floor, if possible.
  • Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in cardboard, taped and marked “FRAGILE”. Store on edge, never flat.
  • Make a list of packing material you will need for your moving project: boxes, bubble-wrap, tape, markers, inventory sheets, mattress bags, furniture covers, etc.
  • Disassemble beds etc. whenever possible and tape or tie legs to the frame.
  • Do not pack large boxes with a number of heavy items. Try to limit boxes to 30 pounds or less.
  • When you disassemble your electronics, mark cables and ports where possible and/or make diagrams.
  • When storing woollens and cottons, use cedar chips or mothballs to protect from moth damage.
  • Wax wood furniture before storing and cover with sheets or cloths.
  • Do not stack heavy or folded objects as they may shift or collapse when you move items or need access.
  • Number your boxes on all sides and use an inventory sheet to list contents to avoid needless box openings if you need a certain item. Keep these sheets in a safe place away from the actual storage area.
  • Never write contents on boxes, as sometimes the contents will change.
  • Mark “FRAGILE” on boxes that contain breakables.
  • Avoid using printed newspaper as it may leave smudges when used for packing.
  • Leave an air space around the perimeter of the unit to allow for air circulation.
  • Clothing that normally hangs in a closet should be hung in a garment bag. Wardrobe boxes are available.
  • Lining your unit floor with plastic will provide extra protection.
